12 Step Programs, Calix, and Courage

NEW! Chicagoland CALIX UNIT of The Calix Society

The society was founded in Minneapolis , Minn. , in 1947 by a group of five men, all recovering alcoholics, who saw their faith as a sure path to serenity without alcohol. “Calix” is Latin for “chalice”, and these men accepted the idea that they were substituting “the cup that sanctifies for the cup that stupefies”. The “Credo” of the society succinctly tells the story: “Calix is an association of Catholic alcoholics who are maintaining their sobriety through affiliation with and participation in the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Calix is no substitute for A.A. In fact, faithful attendance at A.A. or Al-Anon meetings is strongly recommended. This is definitely no attempt to establish a Catholic A.A. And by all means we must continue to respect A.A.'s nondenominational position. However, as Christians we often feel our response to the 11 th step is less than satisfactory. It is in this area that Calix can offer a positive program- one that not only applies to all the steps but also leads us to a better understanding of our Higher Power, who for us is Jesus Christ. “He is the key that opens all the hidden treasures of God's wisdom and knowledge.” ( Col. 2-3)
